A cultural and educational exchange program enables Jordanian students to pursue up to two years of full-time study towards a master’s degree in the United States. All fields of study are accepted except for any clinical fields which require direct interaction with human subjects.

Overview

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP) is provided by the Fulbright Commission in Jordan for qualified Jordanian students to pursue a master’s degree in the United States of America. The program covers up to two (2) years' full-time study, in all fields of study except for clinical fields which require direct interaction with human subjects (such as medicine, veterinary science, and dentistry) as well as programs leading to  commercial, private, or remote (drone) pilot licenses, and any other fields that requires a license as part of its curriculum.

Beyond academics, the Fulbright program allows participants to serve as cultural ambassadors, promoting mutual understanding between the U.S. and Jordan while gaining valuable exposure to American society and culture.

Application and Nomination Timeline

Eligibility

Applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for this program:

  • Resident in Jordan: Applicants must reside in Jordan starting from the application process and throughout the selection, placement and pre-departure processes.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a university recognized by the Jordanian Ministry of Higher Education, with transcripts that demonstrate consistent academic performance suitable for graduate-level study in the U.S. with an equivalency of “Good” and above.
  • Applicants are expected to have a proven excellent command of English to carry-out high-level academic work.
  • Applicants should be representative and responsible citizens who can contribute to mutual understanding between the people of the United States and Jordan.
  • Applicants should demonstrate the cross-cultural sensitivity and flexibility needed to adjust successfully to life in the United States.
  • Preference will be given to interested applicants who meet the above eligibility requirements in the fields of Arts, and Humanities, and Social Sciences.
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) applicants must have 3-5 years of work experience beyond their most recent university degree. For other fields of study, work experience is strongly preferred but not required.

Who is ineligible to apply for this competition:

  • Dual US/Jordanian citizens; persons applying for or holding permanent residence (Green Card) in the United States are not eligible.
  • A candidate who has resided in the United States for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the date of application is ineligible for a grant. (A candidate who has lived in the United States for nine months or more during a calendar year is deemed to have resided in the United States for that year.)
  • Individuals who are employees or close family members or dependents of employees of the Fulbright Commission, the Commission’s board, the US Embassy or the US Department of State or its cooperating agencies are ineligible to apply for the program.

Application Components

  • Official and certified university transcripts in English. You will be asked to upload a scan of these documents with the grading system on the back; however, hard copies should also be mailed, couriered or hand-delivered directly to the Fulbright office in Jordan.
  • Three letters of recommendation: More details are available below.
  • A detailed CV/resume.
  • Portfolio: Candidates applying for a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree must submit a portfolio showing their work in previous years.
  • Two essays written in English by the applicant:
    1. Personal Statement
    2. Study and Research Objectives
  • Passport copy or Jordanian ID: the FFSP applicants should make a clear photocopy of his/her Jordanian Passport or ID and include this page with the application.
  • An English proficiency score report: TOEFL© iBT (minimum acceptable score 79) or TOEFL© ITP (minimum acceptable score 550). Upon registering for the TOEFL ©(iBT) exam, you will have an account on the ETS system (Educational Testing Service).

In order to have original copies of your TOEFL© score reports sent to Fulbright and Amideast, you need to add two DI codes (Institutional Codes): (8293) for Fulbright Jordan and (5027) for Amideast Washington, D.C. For the TOEFL© exam, the codes should be entered 48 hours prior to the exam on your ETS account. We are offering a 25% discount on the TOEFL iBT from February 1st, 2025, to June 30th, 2025. Recommendation letters

  • Contact three referees and ask them to provide you with letters of recommendation. Your recommenders may include professors who taught you and/or supervisors at work.
  • Applicants should not view the contents of these letters of recommendation, as it is a confidential document between the referee/recommender and the Fulbright Commission and its counterparts.
  • There are several ways to submit your recommendation letters:
    1. Through Slate, the online application: You may register the names and contact information of your referees online, on your online application, and then your referees will receive instructions from the system on how to complete these forms. Or;
    2. Through e-mail: You can send the “Letter of Reference Form” by e-mail to your referees who should fill it out electronically. Scanned letters with handwritten text will not be accepted. After completing the letter, the referee should either email (jo.programs@fulbright.org.jo), courier, or hand-deliver the letter in a sealed envelope, directly to the Fulbright Commission.

J-1 Visa

  • Fulbright scholars enter the United States on an Exchange Visitor (J-1) visa, under a Department of State exchange program, and are subject to the two-year home-country residency requirement, at the end of their research award in the U.S. which allows them to apply what they’ve learned, contribute to their community, and share the experiences and knowledge gained during their time in the U.S.
  • Once Fulbright grantees start their study in the US, they should maintain a satisfactory academic performance of 3.00 GPA throughout their graduate studies as part of their visa requirements.
